At Sona Solar Zimbabwe, we understand the importance of clean water access.

Ground water detectors are valuable tools in locating water sources, but interpreting the data can be confusing. This article tackles a frequently asked question: what do the colors in a ground water detector profile represent?

Understanding the Color Bar:

Imagine a vertical bar on the right side of the profile filled with various colors. This is the color bar, and each color represents a specific range of potential difference (voltage) values. The top color (red) signifies the highest values, and the colors transition to blue as the values decrease.

Numbers beside each color indicate the voltage range it represents.

Beware of Color Shifts:

The maximum value on the profile can fluctuate due to factors like signal strength or interference. This means the color representing a specific voltage range can also change. Don't rely solely on color; observe the value numbers for a more accurate interpretation.

Colors and Conductivity:

The color scheme indirectly reflects the electrical conductivity of the rock layers. Red indicates lower conductivity (harder rocks), while blue suggests higher conductivity (possibly water-bearing zones). However, this is not a definitive rule. Many factors influence conductivity, making interpretation complex.

Finding Water: Anomalies are Key:

Focus on abrupt changes in color or contour lines (shape of the lines). These "anomalies" might indicate variations in rock properties, including the presence of water. Look for sudden shifts in color, sharp changes in contour line density, or V-shaped patterns.

Rock Composition Matters:

Rock type and composition significantly impact water availability. While blue areas might suggest better water potential, consider the overall context. A localized blue zone within a red-dominated profile could indicate fractures, not necessarily water abundance.

Red Areas Can Hold Promise Too:

Finding water in blue-dominated profiles can involve locating reddish areas – these might represent rocks with better fracture development, potentially holding water. Analyze the impact of rock type on the overall value to make informed decisions.

Interpreting Layers:

The color of a layer, like a sand and gravel layer, depends on the underlying formation. A reddish layer above a low-value mudstone might indicate water, but this could reflect the influence of the underlying layer.

Maximum Value Insights:

The maximum value on the color bar (reddest color) is an indirect reflection of rock resistivity (resistance to electrical current). This value can increase when the measurement line is close to high voltage sources. A larger maximum value doesn't necessarily mean better water prospects. Analyze the value along with the color scheme for a comprehensive understanding.

White Color and 0 Values:

White typically represents a measured value of 0. This usually coincides with the dark blue color at the bottom of the color bar (representing a very low voltage range). The presence of white areas doesn't necessarily affect other regions of the profile.

Beware of "Flying Points":

Black diamond-shaped blocks might appear in the profile. These "flying points" represent unusually high values likely caused by interference. They can disappear upon retesting and shouldn't be solely relied upon for well placement.

Interpreting Blue-Dominated Upper Sections:

A profile with a large blue upper section and a red lower section doesn't necessarily mean the upper part lacks water. Analyze the value corresponding to the blue color. If the value is very low, consider abandoning this measurement line or seeking additional information. Look for high-value points within the blue zone for well placement, particularly in crystalline rock formations.

Interpreting ground water detector profiles requires a holistic approach. While color plays a role, consider value ranges, anomalies, rock composition, and potential interference factors. Consult a professional for a comprehensive analysis to ensure successful well placement.
